A digital media platform for the 2nd decade of the 21st century

Until recently digital media initiatives – commercial deployments or standards/specification – were invariably ad hoc solutions designed to address specific needs. Today more and more companies and industry fora see their business in digital media value chains. Although solutions are based on proprietary technologies and industry-specific standards, there is a clear intent to “establish digital media platforms” as references for the industry, as opposed to just making recourse to ad hoc solutions for specific problems.

We like to think that the approach advocated by the Digital Media Manifesto back in 2003 and, subsequently, by the Digital Media Project to promote continuing successful development, deployment and use of digital media that respect the rights of creators and rights holders to exploit their works, the wish of end users to fully enjoy the benefits of digital media and the interests of various value-chain players to provide products and services has been instrumental in changing the approach of the industry.

After developing the specification of the Interoperable DRM Platform (IDP), a standards-based end-to-end digital media value chain, Chillout®, an Open Source Software implementation of the IDP, deploying large scale digital media value chain using the Chillout Software and proposing the Open Media Marketplace (OMM), anticipating the need for the next generation digital media value chains, DMP takes the lead once again leading the industry into a new world of mass deployment of interoperable end-to-end digital media value chains.

DMP believes that the emerging MPEG Advanced IPTV Terminal standard [5], whose requirements support the basic DMP Open Media Marketplace requirements, is an excellent starting point for the development of an industry-grade digital media platform for use by contributing members. We call this the dmp21-2 platform or simply P21-2.

Guidelines for the development and use of the P21-2 platform

The development and use of the “Digital Media Platform for the 2nd decade of the 21st century” shall be according to the following guidelines

What are the benefits for a company or organisation joining DMP?


By joining DMP and working on the P21-2 platform a company will acquire the right to make broad use, including for commercial purposes, of an industry-grade digital media software platform


For what duration will the right to make use of the P21-2 software be granted?


The right will be granted in perpetuity, but only for the versions of the P21-2 software issued while the company or organisation was a contributing DMP member


Why is the focus of P21-2 on the Advanced IPTV standard?


Since content consumption trends show a marked increase in video streaming demand beyond other major types of traffic (P2P, media downloading and storing) and since DMP has already successfully contributed most of its developments to the MPEG community (Media streaming MAF, MXM, MVCO), centring its Open Media Market development around both IPTV and MXM standard technologies is strategically important for achieving maximum uptake in a short to midterm period.
